Giving thanks

I will give thanks to the Lord for he is good ; his love endures forever .Psalm 118:1(NIV)

Working in the public health sector , I retired from being a professional nurse seven months ago. My application for a goverment pension was fraught with human and technical errors that resulted that I was left without a pensionable income.Upon reflection I discovered I was on a learning curve these seven months. The two things that I have learnt are:

I learnt something about myself

And

I learnt something about my God.

As the weeks and months progressed without any notification about my application , I quietly became anxious. My exiting bank balance indicated that soon there will be nothing left. No source of income equals worry.

I have been a practicing professional nurse for many years and every month I was remunerated for my services. I was confident and self assured that there will always be an income that will top up my bank balance.

Anxiety is often viewed as a negative feeling but anxiousness can also be a strong motivating factor. My anxiety caused me to turn to my God in prayer.

Seek he first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

I learned that before I seek help from anybody I must tell Jesus first.

Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your request to God.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

I presented my anxious thoughts and feelings to the Lord. I journal my prayers with scriptures from God’s word. Slowly I became less anxious and my anxious thoughts disappeared.

I have learnt that God keeps his promises. He has promised that if we give him our anxious moments he will give us his peace. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

I went about my daily chores calmly and peacefully. I also asked the Lord to bless me with wisdom on how to manage the resources I already have.

If any man lack wisdom let him ask God , who gives generously to all without finding fault.

James 1:5 (NIV)

I thank my God that he answered my prayers. Looking back during that time I did not spend money on anything I did not need. God blesses me with Godly wisdom.

I thank the Lord that he has been good to me. Despite having to wait for several months I have received notification that my application for a pension hss been approved.

From this experience I have learnt the following:

  1. God is faithful in keeping his promise
  2. God answered my prayers
  3. God blessed me with wisdom
  4. God helped me to learn and grow
  5. God helped me to be confident and share his goodness so that others can trust him also.
